DESCRIPTION |
Hexavalent Chromium Removal Strong Base Anion Exchange Resin is a specialized anion exchange material specifically engineered for the selective removal of hexavalent chromium [Cr(VI)] from water and wastewater. These resins typically feature strong base functional groups that effectively adsorb chromate (CrO₄²⁻) anions even in the presence of competing ions.
Electroplating Wastewater Treatment: Primary application for treating rinse waters and process streams from electroplating and metal finishing operations.
Cooling Tower Blowdown: Removal of chromate-based corrosion inhibitors from cooling tower blowdown water.
Groundwater Remediation: Treatment of chromium-contaminated groundwater at industrial sites.
Chemical Industry Wastewater: Treatment of process water from pigment, dye, and chemical manufacturing facilities.
Leather Tanning Effluents: Removal of chromium from wastewater generated in leather tanning processes.
Type: Strong Base Anion Exchange Resin (Typically Type I or II)
Matrix: Polystyrene-DVB (Gel or Macroporous)
Functional Group: Quaternary Ammonium
Ionic Form As Shipped: Cl⁻
Total Exchange Capacity: ≥1.0 eq/L
Specific Cr(VI) Capacity: ~100 g Cr/L resin (varies with conditions)
Moisture Retention: 50-60%
Particle Size Range: 0.3-1.2 mm
Shipping Weight: 670-720 g/L
Specific Gravity: 1.06-1.10 g/ml
Effective Size: 0.4-0.7 mm
Uniformity Coefficient: ≤1.6
Maximum Operating Temperature: 60°C (OH⁻ form)
Note: These are general guidelines. Specific parameters depend on the resin type and water chemistry.
1. Operating Conditions
Service Flow Rate: 5 - 20 BV/h
Optimal pH Range: 4 - 8 (Cr(VI) exists as chromate)
Operating Temperature: 5 - 40°C
Influent Cr(VI) Concentration: Effective for a wide range, typically 1 - 100 mg/L
2. Regeneration
Regenerant: NaCl (8-12%) or NaOH (1-2%) + NaCl combination
Regenerant Dosage: 150 - 300 g NaCl/L resin
Regeneration Flow Rate: 2 - 4 BV/h
Contact Time: 30 - 60 minutes
3. Rinsing
Rinse Flow Rate: 5 - 15 BV/h
Rinse Volume: 2 - 4 Bed Volumes
Rinse Endpoint: Low Cr(VI) in effluent and stable conductivity
4. Performance Indicators
Breakthrough Capacity: Highly dependent on water composition; typically 50-150 g Cr(VI)/L resin
Effluent Quality: Can achieve <0.05 mg/L Cr(VI)
Regeneration Efficiency: 70-90% depending on regenerant and conditions
5. Important Considerations
Competing Anions: High sulfate concentrations can significantly reduce Cr(VI) capacity.
Reduction to Cr(III): Under certain conditions, Cr(VI) may be reduced to Cr(III) on the resin, potentially affecting performance.
Spent Regenerant: Requires proper management as it contains concentrated chromium.
Pre-treatment: Filtration is recommended if suspended solids are present.
ADVANTAGES |

High Selectivity for Chromate: Specifically formulated to preferentially adsorb hexavalent chromium over other common anions.
Efficient Removal to Low Levels: Capable of reducing Cr(VI) concentrations to below 0.05 mg/L, meeting stringent discharge standards.
Stable Performance in Oxidizing Conditions: Maintains functionality in the oxidizing conditions where Cr(VI) is stable.
Regenerable Operation: Can be regenerated with brine or alkaline brine solutions, allowing for multiple use cycles.
High Exchange Capacity: Substantial capacity for chromate ions, ensuring economical operation.
