DESCRIPTION |
Ammonia Nitrogen Removal Ion Exchange Resin is a specialized strong acid cation exchange resin specifically designed for the selective removal of ammonium ions (NH₄⁺) from wastewater and contaminated water sources. It operates effectively across a wide pH range and demonstrates superior selectivity for ammonium ions even in the presence of competing cations.
Municipal Wastewater Treatment: Used as a tertiary treatment step to achieve low effluent total nitrogen levels, particularly in sensitive watershed areas.
Landfill Leachate Treatment: Effectively removes high concentrations of ammonia nitrogen from complex landfill leachate streams.
Industrial Wastewater Treatment: Applied in wastewater from fertilizer, chemical, food processing, and semiconductor industries with high ammonia content.
Aquaculture and Aquarium Systems: Maintains low ammonia levels in recirculating aquaculture systems to protect aquatic life.
Drinking Water Treatment: Removes ammonia from source waters to meet drinking water standards and prevent nitrification in distribution systems.
Type: Strong Acid Cation Exchange Resin
Matrix: Polystyrene-Divinylbenzene (Macroporous or Gel)
Functional Group: Sulfonic Acid (-SO₃H)
Ionic Form As Shipped: Na⁺
Total Exchange Capacity: ≥1.8 eq/L
Ammonium Selectivity Coefficient (K NH₄/Na): >2.5
Moisture Retention: 45-55%
Particle Size Range: 0.3-1.2 mm (≥95%)
Effective Size: 0.4-0.7 mm
Uniformity Coefficient: ≤1.6
Specific Gravity: 1.25-1.30 g/ml
Shipping Weight: 800-850 g/L
Note: These are general guidelines. Specific parameters must be confirmed with the manufacturer's data sheet.
1. Operating Conditions
Service Flow Rate: 5 - 15 BV/h (Bed Volumes per hour)
Influent Ammonia Concentration: Effective from 1 to >100 mg/L NH₄-N
Optimal pH Range: 4 - 8 (effective across broader range)
Operating Temperature: 5 - 40°C
2. Regeneration
Regenerant: Sodium Chloride (NaCl) brine
Regenerant Concentration: 5 - 12%
Regenerant Dosage: 150 - 250 g NaCl/L resin
Regeneration Flow Rate: 2 - 4 BV/h
Contact Time: 30 - 60 minutes
3. Rinsing
Slow Rinse: 1 - 2 BV at regeneration flow rate
Fast Rinse: 2 - 3 BV at service flow rate
Rinse Endpoint: Effluent chloride concentration matches influent, or conductivity stabilizes
4. Performance Indicators
Operating Capacity: 0.8 - 1.2 eq/L (as NH₄⁺)
Ammonia Breakthrough: Typically defined as 0.5 - 1.0 mg/L NH₄-N in effluent
Regeneration Efficiency: 70 - 90% (dependent on brine dosage and contact time)
5. Important Considerations
Competing Ions: High concentrations of calcium, magnesium, and sodium will reduce ammonium removal capacity and require more frequent regeneration.
Organic Fouling: Pre-treatment may be necessary for wastewaters with high organic content to prevent resin fouling.
Biological Growth: Measures to control biological growth in the resin bed may be required in warm conditions.
Waste Brine Management: Spent brine requires proper disposal or treatment, as it contains high concentrations of ammonia.
ADVANTAGES |
High Ammonium Selectivity: Specifically formulated to preferentially remove ammonium ions over competing cations like calcium, magnesium, and sodium.
Consistent Low Effluent Levels: Capable of reducing ammonia nitrogen concentrations to below 0.1 mg/L, meeting stringent discharge limits.
High Exchange Capacity: Offers substantial ammonium removal capacity (typically 1.0-1.5 eq/L), ensuring long service cycles.
Regenerability and Reusability: Can be efficiently regenerated with sodium chloride brine, allowing for multiple operation cycles and reducing operational costs.
Stable Performance in Varied Conditions: Maintains effectiveness across temperature fluctuations and in the presence of common wastewater constituents.
