DESCRIPTION |
High Capacity Cation and Anion Exchange Resins are advanced polymeric beads engineered with a high density of functional groups per unit volume, providing superior ion exchange capacity compared to standard resins. Cation resins typically feature strong acid sulfonic groups (-SO₃⁻), while anion resins utilize strong base quaternary ammonium groups (-N⁺R₃). Their "high capacity" is achieved through a optimized matrix structure that maximizes active sites.
High-Purity Water Production: Essential for industrial demineralizers and mixed-bed polishers in power plants and microelectronics to produce ultra-pure water with very low ionic contamination.
Pharmaceutical and Biotech Purification: Used in the downstream processing of biomolecules like antibiotics, proteins, and vaccines for selective separation and purification.
Chemical and Catalytic Processes: Serve as catalysts in organic synthesis reactions (e.g., esterification, hydrolysis) due to their high activity and ease of separation.
Metal Recovery and Hydrometallurgy: Critical for the selective extraction, concentration, and purification of valuable metals (e.g., copper, uranium, rare earths) from process leachates.
Condensate Polishing in Power Generation: Specially formulated high-capacity resins are used to remove ionic impurities from turbine condensate, protecting boiler systems.
Note: These are general guidelines. Specific parameters must be confirmed with the manufacturer's data sheet for the particular resin.
1. Operating Conditions
Typical Operating Capacity: Cation: 1.9 - 2.2 eq/L; Anion: 1.1 - 1.4 eq/L (OH⁻ form). Varies significantly with influent composition and regeneration level.
Service Flow Rate: 5 - 40 m/h (depending on application and required quality).
pH Range: 0 - 14 for both strong cation and strong anion resins.
Max. Operating Temperature: 100 - 120°C (Cation, Na⁺ form); 60 - 80°C (Anion, OH⁻ form).
2. Regeneration
Regenerants: Cation: HCl (4-5%) or H₂SO₄; Anion: NaOH (2-4%).
Regenerant Dosage: Cation: 80 - 200 g HCl/L resin; Anion: 80 - 160 g NaOH/L resin.
Regeneration Flow Rate: 2 - 5 m/h.
Contact Time: 30 - 60 minutes.
3. Rinsing
Rinse Flow Rate: Slow rinse at regen flow rate, then fast rinse at service flow rate.
Rinse Volume: Typically 2 - 4 Bed Volumes for fast rinse, or until effluent pH/conductivity stabilizes.
4. Physical & Chemical Properties
Total Capacity: Cation: ≥4.8 eq/kg; Anion: ≥3.8 eq/kg (Cl⁻ form).
Moisture Content: Cation: 40-55%; Anion: 50-65%.
Particle Size Range: 300 - 1200 μm.
5. Important Considerations
Fouling Potential: High-capacity resins can be susceptible to fouling by organic matter (anion resins) or iron/aluminum scaling (cation resins). Pre-treatment is often critical.
Osmotic Shock: Avoid sudden, large changes in solution concentration during operation or regeneration to protect the resin matrix.
ADVANTAGES |
Superior Exchange Capacity: The primary advantage is a significantly higher operational capacity (typically 10-30% greater than standard resins), leading to longer service runs and reduced regeneration frequency.
Improved Process Economics: Higher capacity translates to lower chemical consumption for regeneration, less wastewater produced per cycle, and increased throughput, lowering operational costs.
Enhanced Kinetic Performance: Many high-capacity resins are designed for fast ion exchange kinetics, allowing for higher flow rates without compromising the quality of the treated effluent.
Robust Physical Stability: Advanced manufacturing techniques often result in beads with high mechanical strength and resistance to osmotic shock and attrition, ensuring a long service life.
Versatility: Available in various grades (gel, macroporous) and with tailored properties, making them suitable for a wide range of demanding applications, including those with organic foulants.
