Strong Acid Cation Exchange Resin is a versatile ion exchange material characterized by its sulfonic acid functional groups (-SO₃H) attached to a polymer matrix, typically polystyrene cross-linked with divinylbenzene. It operates effectively across the entire pH range (0-14) and can exchange cations in both neutral and acidic solutions, making it one of the most widely used ion exchange resins.
Water Softening: Primarily used to remove hardness ions (Ca²⁺, Mg²⁺) from water by exchanging them for sodium ions (Na⁺).
Demineralization: Works in tandem with anion exchange resins in deionization processes to remove all dissolved salts, producing high-purity water.
Decolorization & Purification: Used in the sugar, food, and pharmaceutical industries to remove impurities and color bodies.
Chemical Catalysis: Serves as an acid catalyst in organic synthesis reactions such as esterification, alkylation, and hydrolysis.

1. Operating Conditions
Service Flow Rate: 5 - 40 BV/h (Bed Volumes per hour), depending on application.
Operating Temperature: Up to 120°C (H⁺ form), up to 150°C (Na⁺ form).
pH Range: 0 - 14.
2. Regeneration
Regenerant: For H⁺ form: HCl (4-5%) or H₂SO₄ (2-6%); For Na⁺ form: NaCl (8-12%).
Regenerant Dosage: HCl: 100-200 g/L resin; H₂SO₄: 150-300 g/L resin; NaCl: 150-250 g/L resin.
Regeneration Flow Rate: 2 - 5 BV/h.
Contact Time: 30 - 60 minutes.
3. Rinsing
Rinse Flow Rate: Slow rinse at regeneration flow rate, then fast rinse at service flow rate.
Rinse Volume: Approximately 2 - 4 Bed Volumes for fast rinse, or until effluent pH/conductivity stabilizes.
4. Performance Indicators
Operating Capacity: Varies with influent composition and regeneration level, typically 1.6 - 1.9 eq/L.
Leakage: Dependent on operating conditions and regeneration efficiency.
5. Important Considerations
Oxidant Attack: Susceptible to degradation by strong oxidizing agents (e.g., free chlorine). Maintain concentration <0.1 mg/L.
Iron Fouling: Exposure to iron can lead to fouling; pre-treatment is recommended if iron concentration is high.
Suspended Solids: Pre-filtration is advised to prevent clogging and increased pressure drop.
