DESCRIPTION |
Weak Acid Cation (WAC) Ion Exchange Resin is an insoluble polymer containing carboxylic acid (-COOH) functional groups. It exhibits a high affinity for divalent cations associated with alkalinity, particularly calcium and magnesium bicarbonate, but only operates effectively within a near-neutral to alkaline pH range. Its exchange reaction is stoichiometric, requiring an amount of acid for regeneration equivalent to its exchange capacity.
Alkalinity Removal & Dealkalization: Selectively removes calcium and magnesium associated with bicarbonate alkalinity, effectively dealkalizing water without adding sodium.
Hardness Removal in High-Alkalinity Water: Used for partial softening when the primary goal is to remove bicarbonate hardness.
Water Recycling & Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD): Often used as a pre-treatment step to reduce scaling potential in reverse osmosis (RO) systems by removing hardness and associated alkalinity.
Sugar & Beverage Industry: Employed for the de-ashing and purification of sugar syrups, fruit juices, and other food products.
Whey Demineralization: Crucial in the dairy industry for the partial demineralization of whey, improving its nutritional and functional properties.
Note: These are general guidelines. Specific parameters must be confirmed with the manufacturer's data sheet for the particular resin.
1. Operating Conditions
Service Flow Rate: 5 - 20 BV/h (Bed Volumes per hour).
Influent Water Quality: Most effective on waters with a hardness-to-alkalinity ratio close to 1.
pH Range: Requires influent pH > 4.5 (typically 6.0 - 9.0) to remain in the ionized (-COO⁻) form for effective operation.
Operating Temperature: Up to 120°C.
2. Regeneration
Regenerant: Hydrochloric Acid (HCl) or Sulfuric Acid (H₂SO₄).
Regenerant Concentration: HCl: 0.5 - 2.0%; H₂SO₄: 0.5 - 1.0% (to prevent calcium sulfate precipitation).
Regenerant Dosage: Near stoichiometric, approximately 105-110% of the theoretical requirement.
Regeneration Flow Rate: 2 - 5 BV/h.
Contact Time: 20 - 60 minutes.
3. Rinsing
Rinse Flow Rate: Slow rinse at regen flow rate, then fast rinse at service flow rate.
Rinse Volume: Approximately 2 - 4 Bed Volumes for fast rinse.
4. Physical & Chemical Properties
Total Capacity: ≥ 4.5 eq/L (H⁺ form).
Moisture Content: 45 - 55%.
Ionic Form as Shipped: H⁺ (Hydrogen) form.
Swelling: Exhibits significant volume change (swelling/shrinking) between H⁺ and Ca²⁺/Mg²⁺ forms, which must be considered in vessel design.
5. Important Considerations
pH Sensitivity: Cannot operate in acidic conditions (pH < 4.5) as the functional groups will protonate and lose their exchange capability.
Limited Cation Removal: Only removes cations associated with alkalinity (primarily Ca²⁺ and Mg²⁺ as bicarbonates). It does not remove permanent hardness (chlorides, sulfates) or sodium.
Swelling Management: The substantial volume change during service and regeneration cycles requires careful design of the freeboard space in the ion exchange column.
ADVANTAGES |
High Efficiency for Bicarbonate Hardness: Exhibits a very strong preference for cations associated with bicarbonate (temporary hardness), leading to highly efficient dealkalization.
High Total Exchange Capacity: Possesses the highest theoretical exchange capacity of all cation resins (typically > 4.0 eq/L), resulting in long service runs.
Easy and Efficient Regeneration: Can be regenerated with stoichiometric or near-stoichiometric amounts of a weak acid (e.g., HCl, H₂SO₄), making it highly efficient and cost-effective with minimal regenerant waste.
Salt Tolerance: Performs well in waters with high TDS (Total Dissolved Solids) where strong acid cation (SAC) resins would be inefficient.
Environmental Friendliness: The regeneration process produces non-toxic byproducts (e.g., carbon dioxide and water), making it an environmentally benign process.
